The National Curriculum Council has Announced new Subjects for 9th to 12th Class. Taking a major step to align students with the modern demands of employment and practical sectors, the National Curriculum Council has decided to introduce new subjects for classes 9 to 12 after a gap of 28 years under the National Curriculum. Changes in syllabus after a long gap
National Curriculum Council Director Dr Maryam Chaghtai stressed the need for the renewal citing the obsolescence of the curriculum which had not been updated since 2006 for compulsory subjects and since 1995 for optional subjects. Recognizing the need to keep pace with evolving educational needs, the Council embarked on a comprehensive review to modernize the curriculum.
Implementation of new curriculum across Pakistan
Under the new framework, provinces including Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will gradually implement the revised curriculum. Dr. Chaghtai also outlined the step-by-step process, which shows that Sindh will be the first province to adopt the updated syllabus for optional subjects for classes 9 and 11 this year (2024), making it the 10th. Despite financial constraints, the council has undertaken a comprehensive upgradation of 83 subjects (both technical and optional) demonstrating its commitment to educational reforms. Technical and optional subjects
This revised curriculum consists of diverse subjects, catering to different interests and career paths. Technical education subjects such as medical technology, fashion designing, graphic designing, and hospitality management are among the additions, providing students with practical skills and professional knowledge that are essential for today's job market. In addition to technical subjects, a wide range of new electives have been introduced, including English literature, psychology, sociology, economics, and languages including French, German, Persian and Arabic.
